| Fantasia Barrino was born and raised in High Point, North Carolina. She beat out 70,000 other contestants and finalist Diana DeGarmo by 1.3 million votes to become the third American Idol. Her gospel-tinged voice and sultry rendition of "Summertime" even won over prickly judge Simon Cowell who said America got it "100 percent right."
