Missed it by THAT much!
We regret to report that spacefaring columnist Moxie did not in fact land on the moon as planned: she misjudged the length of time it would take her game-powered spaceship to travel that far. Nonetheless, she’s had a great month watching the moon get bigger, the Earth get smaller, and thousands of people play millions of hours of awesome free web games!
Moxie’s Log
6/1/07: D’OH! Miles traveled = 230191 (34.2 million gameplay hours!) Well, it looks like Moxie is in for one of those nasty headaches she gets when there’s no coffee to be found. It’s June first, her java supply has run completely out, and she didn’t quite make it to the moon. It was very close, though – only 1.5 million gameplay hours short – so she’s already contemplating whether to try another expedition after she returns to Earth. For now, she’s surviving on aspirin and a few leftover chocolates, and plotting her course back home.
Moxie wants to thank everyone who played games this month to help her spaceship along. You all rock!
5/29/07: So close! Miles traveled = 210487 (31.3 million gameplay hours!) The moon looks absolutely huge from here! Vast and gray and mostly empty: Moxie is fairly sure that she won’t have trouble finding a place to park. She’s trying to decide between the cleverly named Mare Ingenii and the Schrodinger Basin – she figures there’s a 50/50 chance of finding a live cat there (Moxie loves cats). With only three days left until her scheduled landing, though, she’s stressing that even the legion of game-loving MSN Games players might not be able to generate the 4.4 million hours of playtime her ship needs to arrive in time. Unless, of course, everyone makes a concerted effort to play lots of games in the next few days!
She’s almost there! Play a few extra rounds of your favorite web game today, and help her reach her destination!
5/21/07: “Redmond, we have a problem” Miles traveled = 152013 (22.6 million gameplay hours!) It’s official: Moxie’s trip to the moon is not going as well as she’d hoped. Between the constant, annoying hum of her spaceship’s air system, the complete lack of drive-through Mexican restaurants, and that whole unpleasant incident with the zero-gravity ketchup bottle, she was already thinking that perhaps a vacation in Aruba might have been a better idea. But she persevered, in part because she is absolutely determined to find out whether it’s possible to play Dance Dance Revolution on the moon without launching yourself into low orbit.
Unfortunately, her ship hasn’t gained much speed since last week, and she’s still behind schedule. She’s already well past the halfway point, so there’s no point in turning around now: the nearest refill for her coffee jar is on Moon Base MSN. But can she reach it before her current java level hits zero? Still 13.1 million gameplay hours to go!
5/15/07: We need more speed, captain! Miles traveled = 99354 (14.79 million gameplay hours!) Halfway through the month, and Moxie’s coffee supply is dwindling! At this distance, details of the moon’s surface are starting to look more distinct. This is meteorite territory, though, and Moxie is now grumbling about needing to find a spaceship-body shop when she arrives on the moon, to knock out the dent she got yesterday. As if rock dings on Earth freeways aren’t bad enough!
The meteorite dent is the least of her worries, though. With only half a month left before the java runs dry, she’s not even halfway to the moon yet! Will Moxie end up stuck in outer space? Please play as many games as you can before June 1, so she can land safely!
5/8/07: Past the satellites already Miles traveled = 56806 (8.45 million gameplay hours!) In the past week, MSN Games players have put in nearly eight and a half million hours of play on their favorite free web games! That’s enough to take Moxie’s game-powered spaceship out of Earth’s atmosphere, past the International Space Station, past the Hubble (if only she could stop and use it to check out that giant Hexic piece on Saturn she’s heard so much about!), and even past the distant satellites that carry our communications signals and map Earth’s weather patterns. At 56,806 miles from Earth, she’s more than twice as far up as most satellites! But she still has a long, long way to go…
5/1/07: LIFTOFF! Miles traveled = 0 (0 gameplay hours) Moxie is on her way to the moon! Can you get her there before she runs out of coffee? What’s this all about, anyway? |
